Last night I visited this place for the first time. My boyfriend and I were super excited to go watch live Jazz and the music was absolutely AMAZING! What wasn't amazing was... the service. The server we had was an older gentleman with glasses and he was not friendly. We waited a good 15 minutes before even being asked if we'd like a beverage. After that we ordered bread which we were given no plates... that to me was just odd. The server then came by and took our menus (without even asking if we'd like anything else). I was in the mood for another cocktail and wanted to order some food but at that point felt like the server wanted nothing to do with us. We ended up leaving early because we were so dissatisfied with the level of service we were provided. Great music, great place but POOR service.
I'll give 5 stars for the music, location and vibe and a 3 star (holding my nose) for the food. It's a good place that can be actually great. I'm new to this venue but the food is really not in congruence with what this place projects as image AND the prices. Time to get a real chef in there and push the limits a bit. Only then this place will elevate itself to be a 4.5 -5 star club. I'm amazed to see people giving 4-5 stars to the food; I suppose if you have little or no point of reference, Burger King is also gourmet.
Band was solid. That's about it. There were multiple times where we didn't see any severs on the floor (let alone ours) for over ten minutes. It honestly seemed like they were just horribly understaffed for the size of the room. We didn't order drinks for the first ten minutes. After that it took ten to get them. Burger was warm at best and the bun was cold. Whoever staffed that night dropped the ball pretty hard.
Good music. Without a doubt the worst service I’ve ever experienced in a restaurant. The so-called “server” never returned to take our entree order. Never checked back to see if our appetizers were ok, never asked if we wanted another drink and did not ask if we wanted dessert. He didn’t even thank us for coming in. He should be fired. I left a $1 tip and that was more than he deserved. He also ignored all the other tables around us. I’ll bet he goes home and complains about all the cheap people leaving lousy tips. I may go back but I wouldn’t risk going for the food or drink. A miserable experience.
The Dakota Cooks is one of the only jazz clubs in the Twin Cities and I am so glad it exsists. They have fantastic acts and delicious drinks and food. I suggest ordering your tickets ahead of time and reserving a table for two if you do not want to sit with strangers. Simple and easy to do.
I always look forward coming down town to this gem. Their menu changes often. I suggest trying whatever suits your fancy. I love their flat bread and dips.
