I love Minnesota and I love the UU demonination, but the Sunday service here represents every bad joke about UUism and everything I can't stand about standard fare White Liberal Minnesota. This manifests itself in the over-applauding, laughing frequently at things that aren't really funny, auditory gasping at stories of injustice (which to me dishonors the story-teller, making things about your reaction not their story). Overall it's the typical self-congratulatory tone I see so often around here (it says: "there" is where there are problems...maybe the south or on the police force but not "here"). I know they're trying, but the road to hell really is paved with good intentions. Perhaps it bothers me so much because this is how I was raised or because I still have a large portion of this internal sin myself. Either way, I don't think it helps me overcome it. Where is a UU church that's not afraid to make people uncomfortable?
Welcoming to everyone, inspirational, challenging. The winter solstice service, especially the first one I ever went to, is one of the most deeply spiritual experiences of my life.
UU is warm and welcoming, while fiercely working for social justice. The community is full of creative, interesting, insightful members from diverse spiritual backgrounds.
A great place to settle you soul and be part of a loving community. Especially important during these days.
Open and caring church that does wonderful social justice work.
